A Little TLC could make this great
I live not too far from The Wyndham and have never gotten around to this course, just due to word of mouth of it being in poor shape. I had seen a review hadn’t been left in about a year thinking it had possibly gotten better so I decided to give it a shot today and I have to say, people are right.
I’ll start off by saying that the layout is actually pretty dang good. Some good elevation changes and challenging holes (especially the par 3’s) along with well protected greens surrounded by bunkers. But unfortunately it doesn’t make up for the poor maintenance this place has.
First off you’re greeted by a run down shack with nothing except a person checking you in. No drinks, snacks, or general golf things insight. As I got in the cart, every single one was dirty. After further inspection with the one I chose there were 5 cigarette butts, a bandaid and about 40 pencils stuffed in the drivers slot. It appeared they hadn’t been cleaned in weeks. It also has no signs as to where the first tee is, which after driving around for a bit and finally checking an app’s GPS, it’s about 300 yards from the shack.
Now granted the area hasn’t had much rain this year, but the fairways and greens are ROCK hard. It’s almost as if the ball bounces like a marble. It seems like these place hasn’t been watered all year. The fairways themselves weren’t in terribly shaggy, but they could need some work. While I don’t mind thick rough, they were covered in dandelions making it virtually impossible to find the ball if you weren’t paying extremely close attentions. The greens were extremely craggily making it impossible for the ball to roll even relatively straight. Even though I had some good breaks from these, you shouldn’t even bother lining up a putt. While these were bad, the course did have two things going for it. The tee boxes were level and the bunkers were actually quite nice. Which at times, being in the bunker was a 1000 times better than being in the ankle high rough surrounding the green.
I think with a some care this place could really be one of the best publicly in the immediate Lancaster City area . It’s honestly a shame of how poorly cared for it is. I would return if something was done about it, because I actually really liked the layout. But for now I won’t be returning until something is done.
om the way back
17 holes, mold on 6 of 8 greens on back '9", carts not up to date , no senior rate, terrible putting green, just raised daily rates from $30 to $40, weekends from $35 to $45., no clubhouse, not included in TeeTime Golf Pass or Victory Pass.
New mgmt. has no idea of the number of Seniors that play in Lancaster County they are missing out on.. Have spent good dollars the last year on upgrades, but very few will pay new rates , so the $ will have been wasted , because of lack of play and no golf manager/expert on site. Very disappointed.
POOREST COURSE EVER
This course used to be a good value at $24 per round. There is so much construction going on that the course has just become an awful excuse for a place to play golf! There is no 18th hole, there are literally craters on some of the greens, and you have to drive across another fairway just to get to the other side of the course. IT IS PATHETIC!
New managment but still needs work
The Host is under new management but the course is still in rough shape. There are dandelions in the fairways, greens were fairly slow and some sand traps looked washed out. The course doesn't really have much character to it and most holes are just straight with A LOT of trees.
So sad!
I knew that the course had gotten some poor reviews but I played here several times in the past during it's 'glory days'. What a shame to see what it has become. It has the bones of a very good course but has completely fallen into disrepair. You can see that much maintenance has been deferred.
The greens were just OK and the fairways were just acceptable. Get off the fairway and there was no way to find a ball! That being said, I have to say that for $20 which included cart it was a great deal. The folks at the clubhouse were very nice and accommodating. There was little play when I was there at mid-morning and what groups were out there let me right through as they had the misfortune to be off the fairway into the high grass (I mean ankle deep literally just off the fairway).
I wish them good luck in getting the course back to where it belongs ... it used to be the place to go in the Lancaster area.
What A Shame
This course used to be kept in such great shape and was always fun to play. I played on a Saturday at 11 am and I felt like I was the only one on the course. Now I know why. The front nine looked like it hadn't been mowed since the previous Monday, so if your ball wasn't on the fairway, you literally had to walk on it to find it. The bunkers are a disgrace -- very little sand and grass growing in them. We even took pictures to show our friends. I hope someone remedies the problems because I'm crossing this one off my list until the conditions drastically improve.
