Pittsburgh National Golf Club
About
Formerly known as Deer Run, Pittsburgh National Golf Club has undergone major renovations since management has changed hands over the years, including complete reconditioning of the greens and the addition of 60 new renovated bunkers. The championship golf course that exists today is more challenging than the original though it has retained the same playability. With no blind shots to be found and wide fairways that are player-friendly, the course is inviting to beginners and also offers a casual but interesting round for more advanced players. During the renovation, the club also added a practice facility that includes a grass driving range with heated hitting stalls for year-round use, it is one of the only public grass ranges in the Greater Pittsburgh area. There is also a putting green and chipping area with sand bunkers.

Hilly but nice layout
Started at around 1:00. Did our first 9 in 1 1/2 hours. There was no one in front of us .Came around to do second 9 and found several foursomes on # 10 tee. There was a league going off at 2:30 on both 9's. We complained and the management gave us a rain check for the second 9. Was nice of them to do this. Suggest calling ahead to find out if there are leagues going off and when. Kind of early for a league.
Poorly Run Course
Staff not friendly
No water on course to drink
No starter
Super slow play
Won't be back
S - L - O - W play
I had not played Pittsburgh National in a while...the weather was perfect and there was a 5:54 tee time on Golf Now. I figured I wouldn't get in 18 holes, but whatever, play till dark. I arrive and learn they have weekday leagues M-Th, sometimes twice a day. Pace of play was agonizingly slow. The ranger shooed my cart away from the 1st green, but never tried to speed up play. Waited on every shot, took 2.5 hours to play 9 holes. Carts had to be in a half hour before sunset, so I left after 10 holes. Was on edge the entire time.
Awful Experience
We started behind 2 twosomes and the pace of play was pretty good but after a few holes we were waiting 5-10 minutes on almost every shot.
After making the turn the twosome in front of us drove ahead of a group of five players which was obviously the reason the entire course was backed up. I called the pro shop to make them aware of the fivesome on the 11th hole. Typically, I would not call in but all five of the players were just standing around in the fairway and nobody was even preparing to hit their ball.
They sent a "ranger" out that told them they couldn't play as five and to let us play through. When we went to play through on the next hole the guys started berating me and my gf using vulgar language but the ranger had already went back to the clubhouse. The ranger should have stayed on the tee when we approached as well as make sure they stopped playing as five which they never did. They laughed at my gf when she hit her tee shot and continued to yell at us as we progressed through the hole.
We decided to just quit on the next hole because my gf was extremely upset and it was ridiculous that the course allowed this entire situation to occur. We went to the pro shop and were given a voucher for $30 but the chance of us actually playing here ever again is doubtful. It's a shame because I have been playing at this course for nearly 15 years but the fact that they never have a ranger on the course and did not properly take care of this situation is inexcusable.
Those five players should have been kicked off the golf course. This is the perfect example why golf courses continue to lose business and people don't have the time to play golf because it takes too long.
You money is better spent else where
The management team thinks the course is all high and mighty, its not. You would be better hitting out of the sand then off of 90% of their tee boxes. the greens look like the maintenance team could not give a care about keeping them rolling smooth. Overall its a nice layout and is fairly easy but its not the top notch course that it is advertised to be. The inside bar is nice and cozy. the stand at the turn on 10 is a nice touch, but not having it open and a blistering 90 degree day on a Sunday afternoon is a disappointment.
Poor pro shop employee
Pro shop employee looked down at us because we used Golf Now.
Very poor management.
Condition of course was excellent
Course is the best its been in years. Finished round in 3 hrs. Go play the best course around for a great price.
Great Condition
I really like how they are bringing this course back to its original condition. The greens are in excellent shape and the fairways are well defined. The sodded and seeded tees are almost ready for play. All that is left is to get some new sand in the bunkers and it will be in top shape. I will continue playing here as long as they continue to invest.
Great value. Pace of play can be slow during the season
The course has great potential
This layout is very nice. The course was fine for this time of the year. For some reason, however they have the worst sand trap and tee conditions year after year.
Sand is poor quality and tee are very uneven and not
very level. most have bad slant and too many are crowned.
Shame as it is close to me and could be an excellent layout.
Overbooked
The course is always in good shape and it's fun to play. The issue is slow play. Every time I play this course it is overbooked and play is extremely slow. Still recommended if you don't mind a slow round.
Privacy Beauty and Quality
I've played this course just a few times now, yet I remember when it first opened years ago. Many things have changed but on the course the attention to detail keeps getting better; Soft fluffy sand (once winter ends) fast greens (even now) and new tee boxes completed but not yet open.
Today there is a beautiful club house, locker rooms and restaurant. The practice facilities are good to and the staff makes it all work. A good place to relax and play, become a member or take a client.
Nice Relaxing Round
It was a gray November morning in Pittsburgh. My son and I had the course essentially to ourselves. I enjoy playing here. The restaurant/bar in the clubhouse was closed and I can't blame them for that considering the weather and time of year.
Overall course in great shape except fir a few bunkers that need some attention
I hope that the club responds to your concern. I am from out of town, but I enjoy playing here and they should make an attempt to better address this.
