Greens as good as Laurel
Played golf for roughly 10 years and finally got to Champion Lakes sunday, I'm upset it's taken me this long to finally play this course. For all the rain, the course was in great shape. Greens were in amazing shape, and just as comparable to Laurel or any of the primo tracks here in Western Pa. Some bunkers were in the process of being replaced and had some water after the morning shower, but everything else with the course was perfect. Picture worthy holes, Alison and Dick took care of our entire group with any accommodation they needed. Drive to Bolivar, and play this golf course before all the leaves fall.
The course was in great shape
This course is the best hidden jem there is. Very nice fairways , cut to perfection. Nice greens, the ball rolled very true.
Wonderful
Wonderful course was in excellent shape Grieens perfect Very challenging pin placement pace of play very good The staff was wonderful
League play in front was slow
I will not return on a Tuesday due to 4 1/2 hours to play 18 holes. My fault, should have checked
Worth the drive
Remote location but beautiful area. Course has some tight holes with elevation changes.
Great condition. Fairways and greens very good condition.
We were lucky to chat with the owner, the great Dick Groat!
Challenging course
Course was in reasonably good shape despite the extraordinary amount of rain over the past few months. Greens were very fast and took a little getting used to. I will definitely play here again!
nice layout..great shape...
Course was in great shape...fast greens...well conditioned...my only beef is lack of distance markets on par 3s..tough to tell yardage on par 3s and without range finder my group misclubbed a few times...other than that I'd highly recommend the course and would return anytime.
Champion Lakes
The course has had issues in the past with maintenance. I'm happy to say, it is in spectacular shape, especially considering the major thunder storms that rolled through just a few days prior. The greens were perfect. Some of the bunkers had water and water damage, but I expected that to be the case. As a foursome, we played in just over 4 hours. The pace was just right. Really looking forward to returning.
Hidden Gem
Champion Lakes is not for every golfer, just for those who like a challenge and enjoy beautiful mountainous landscape. The overall course conditions have improved in recent years and has made this course a must play for any serious golfer. On this day the course was a bit wet from recent rains and the sand traps did need some attention other than that very enjoyable!
Challenging track
Champion lakes is a very challenging track with fast, undulating greens that rolled quite nicely. It feels a little more difficult than the 126 slope rating from the white tees.
There are forced carries to a lot of the flag sticks and the bunkers were well manicured. The fast greens make for putting with a lot of break with few putts that you could say were on the edge of the hole or a ball out.
Our round was five hours and a good deal of waiting due to slow golfers so i recommend playing during the week or early on the weekend.
tough but fair
The course is very challenging but it is fair and well-maintained.
Nice layout
Course was in good condition, greens were challenging. They used the woods to funnel you into the greens as you approached them.
Biggest issue was no ranger on the course. There was a foursome in front of us that wouldn't let people play through and was acting as if they were a school. 1 could play but 3 others seemed to be learning. They would all tee off but then the 1 would finish his round then they would go back to the others and he would explain where to hit or how to read the green so they could putt. You expect delays but 3 1/2 hours for 9 holes with nobody in front was ridiculous.
Fast Greens
The greens were just cut and they were lightening fast.
Hidden Gem
I used to play in a
League here every week for years, that was over 10 years ago. Since then some of the nuisance trees have been removed and the greens are now spectacular. Great course with great views and great challenges
Great tight layout
Champion Lakes is a great layout that will have your head spinning. Course conditions were great. It is very tight and greens are very fast for a public course. Course is well worth the money. As a side note, Mr Dick Groat, Pittsburgh Pirate shortstop from the 60's, is owner and has been welcoming us for over 45 years. He is a class act and is more than willing to talk to you about what can be done to improve the course. Does not need much. His daughter has taken over the day to day operations and remembered us even though I had not been there for over 2 years. They have a great course and I hope you will play it soon.
